Brazil’s Oi is now offering its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) service in Sao Paulo.
Until now, the service has been unavailable in Brazil’s most populous city, but Oi is upbeat about its prospects, anticipating 400,000 connected homes in Sao Paulo before the end of 2021. Additionally, it expects to pass two million subscribers in the city within 2022.
The launch takes Oi’s total FTTH footprint across Brazil to 142 towns and cities, and a significant upgrade appears to be on the horizon following Oi’s announcement earlier this month that it is now able to offer a 1Gbps service across this footprint. The 1Gbps service will enable Oi to offer download speeds more than twice as high as its current peak of 400Mbps.
Oi is in the process of divesting its mobile business, leaving its fibre operations as the basis of its strategy for the future. With expansion a key priority, Oi will be spurred as it has seen its fibre subscribers increase by over 150% in the past year.
