Nokia announced on Friday that it has signed a deal with internet service provider Puntonet Ecuador to upgrade its fibre broadband network to 10G, with an eye towards 25GPON in the future.
Under the deal, Puntonet will deploy Nokia’s XGS-PON fibre solutions to expand its current service offering to deliver 10-Gbps broadband speeds to residential and business customers.
Nokia said the 10G upgrade will give Puntonet’s network the necessary capacity, latency and stability to support use cases such as 4K/8K video streaming, competitive gaming and critical business apps for enterprises.
Puntonet will also deploy Nokia’s cloud-native network automation software to streamline operations and lower costs. The Nokia Altiplano Access Controller offers network management and SDN control functions to visualize, automate and optimize broadband access services.
Nokia also said Puntonet used its fibre solution to trial 25GPON, showcasing the network’s flexibility and scalability to seamlessly move from XGS-PON now to 25GPON in the future using the same access node and fibre cables.
Puntonet CEO Katherin Miño said the 25GPON test enabled the ISP to deliver a robust, future-ready infrastructure.
“It enhances service quality for everyone and ensures the infrastructure is prepared to support the country's growth in the coming years,” she said in a statement.
