Nokia announced on Thursday that it has signed a deal with Cambodian telco CamGSM – a.k.a. Cellcard – to migrate its fibre access network from GPON to XGS-PON, which could boost speeds for its broadband customers as high as 10 Gbps.
Under the deal, Cellcard will deploy Nokia’s Lightspan optical line terminals (OLTs) and its cloud-native Altiplano access controller in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and other major cities across Cambodia.
Nokia says the Altiplano access controller – which provides network management and SDN control functions – will enable Cellcard to better visualize, automate and optimize its broadband access services.
Apart from the access speed boost, XGS-PON will also give Cellcard a competitive edge and enhance the reliability, flexibility, and scale of its fibre network to better support evolving customer demands, to include facilitating a seamless upgrade to 25GPON as demand for capacity grows, said Cellcard’s ICT Division CIO Asitha De Costa.
“The new network will enable our users to enjoy high-bandwidth-consuming applications like gaming while enhancing network efficiency through automation,” he said.
De Costa added that while Cellcard has done business with Nokia before, the deal marks the first time the telco has tapped Nokia to supply solutions for its fibre network.
