Ciena and Indian telco Vodafone Idea announced on Tuesday that Vi is modernizing its optical transport network using Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) coherent optical technology running on the 6500 platform.
Ciena said the network upgrade strengthens Vi’s ability to support growing bandwidth demands in India and pursue new business opportunities with hyperscalers, neoscalers (a.k.a. cloud providers that specialize in delivering high-performance infrastructure for intensive AI workloads) and enterprise customers.
Ciena said the deployment provides the foundation for Vi to efficiently support up to 800G services, adding that Vi recently achieved speeds of 1.6 Tbps on its meshed data centre interconnect network in India using WL6e.
Vi CTO Jagbir Singh said the transport network upgrade will position its network to be able to handle AI workloads and capture new growth opportunities for its enterprise, mobility and data centre operations.
““This particular technology from Ciena allows us to scale efficiently while meeting the performance expectations of our most demanding customers,” he said in a statement.
“With WL6e, Vodafone Idea will be able to meet future traffic growth and deliver scalable, high-performance connectivity,” added Amit Malik, Ciena’s VP and GM for Asia Pacific, Japan and India.
