Telxius upgrades terrestrial optics in LATAM, Europe and US with Nokia gear

Nokia announced Tuesday it’s collaborating with global connectivity provider Telxius to deploy 800G coherent pluggable optics across its terrestrial transport networks in Latin America, Europe and the US.

Telxius is leveraging Nokia's ICE-X 800G ZR/ZR+ coherent pluggable technology to add capacity across its existing terrestrial infrastructure with IP-over-DWDM networking, while reducing the power and space required for network expansion. 

Nokia said the tech upgrade will increase network efficiency and simplify operations to deliver resilient, high-performance connectivity for customers.

Telxius is also utilising Nokia’s network automation solution, which Nokia said will give it greater visibility and control across its optical transport network, as well as coordinated service provisioning.

“As AI workloads drive unprecedented growth in traffic between hyperscale data centres and global network hubs, operators need transport solutions that combine scalability, efficiency, and operational simplicity,” said Ron Johnson, senior VP and GM for optical networks at Nokia. “With Nokia's ICE-X 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable technology and network automation solutions, Telxius can efficiently expand capacity across its terrestrial infrastructure, creating a high-performance foundation for data center interconnection and seamless connectivity between terrestrial and subsea networks.”

Telxius’ chief technology and information officer Jesús María Rubio added that the project builds on a recent demo of ICE-X 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable optics over Telxius' BRUSA subsea cable system linking Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza in Brazil with Puerto Rico and Florida. That trial delivered 400 Gbps per wavelength across 5,600+ km, demonstrating the technology’s ability to support ultra-long-haul subsea infrastructure, as well as terrestrial networks.

“This deployment, together with the successful subsea trial on BRUSA, reinforces Telxius’ position at the forefront of optical innovation,” Rubio said.
