Trans-Pacific Unity cable reaches Japan

Inauguration of one of the most powerful fibre-optic cables in the world is ready subject to testing. Construction of the undersea cable between Los Angeles and Chikura has been successful enough for the Unity cable to be set for operations early next year.

The Unity fiber-optic cable has cost US$300 million to construct and carries prestigious sponsorship in that it has been partly sponsored by Google. Data will be transferred at a rate of 4.8 terabits per second, which puts it in the forefront of cable performance.

Connecting with Japan means that just one splice remains before testing can start in the next few days. The process firstly involved two ships in the mid-Pacific paying out the cable to the US and to Japan. The two cables were then joined in mid-Pacific on 30 October; once testing has been successfully completed the splice which physically joins Unity to Japan will be implemented.

Google’s involvement with Unity is generally regarded as necessary to meet its requirements for high-speed data transfer. Google has taken the initiative in a sector where normally carriers build the cables and lease them to service providers. The company is joined as a sponsor by Bharti Airtel, Malaysia's Global Transit, KDDI,  SingTel and Hong Kong's Pacnet.
