Paraguay expects its national fibre-optic network (Red Nacional de Fibra Optica, or RNFO) to be complete by February.
The RNFO initiative is aimed at unifying the fibre networks of state operator Copaco, utilities company Administracion Nacional de Electricidad (ANDE), and the Ministries of Interior and Finance. Copaco operates around 180,000km of fibre, while ANDE has around 120,000km. The ministries respectively have roughly 200km and 74km of fibre.
The country’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (Ministerio de Tecnologias de la Informacion y Comunicacion, MITIC) made this announcement despite the fact that just 14,000km of infrastructure had been integrated at the end of 2019.
The convergence contract was awarded in February 2019 to domestic firm Celexx, which is believed to have a close working relationship with China’s Huawei.
