Cable company promises lower latency for developing countries

A cable company working across multiple regions has high hopes for its latest project which, it says, is designed for poorer countries with limited internet connectivity.

SPARKbANGLA Submarine Cables Ltd (SBSCL), an international carrier within the submarine cable industry with cable initiatives across the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and South China Sea, has announced that it is deploying a 3A, high-capacity, LOOP system third generation submarine cable between Bilbao (Spain) and Hong Kong. The cable contains four high-capacity branches and a number of local branches.

The 3A is a cross-continental cable system connecting Europe to Far East Asia and beyond. The design capacity of this cable is 240 Terabits per second, 12-16 fibre pair upgradeable. There are two super landing stations in Spain and two in Hong Kong. Apart from these, 3A will consist of a number of branching units based on the demand of nearby route path countries.

SBSCL says that “3A is a practical implementation of third generation LOOP system submarine cable technology, allowing less advanced areas to reach European and North American data centres with very short latency.”

The cable has been designed for poor and ultra-poor countries where internet penetration is very low. The east coast of Africa, South East Asia, India and China are some of its major coverage targets.

SBSCL says it has been connecting disconnected people since 2000 in eastern Asia, including many remote islands off Bangladesh and remote and hilly cities in Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia, with, it claims, a one hundred percent success rate.
