Starlink gains Costa Rica licence

The Costa Rican government granted Elon Musk’s satellite connectivity company Starlink an operations licence after a six-month wait, expanding the provider’s footprint in Latin America.

La Nacion reported, the president of the Board of Directors at the Superintendence of Telecommunications (Sutel) Federico Chacon said despite applying in October 2022 approval was only given on April 27. Starlink recently gained permission to connect Guatemala, Panama and El Salvador.

According to Starlin’s coverage map, there is no coverage in Bolivia, Guyana, Guatemala, Suriname, Paraguay, and Argentina until 2024.

Costa Rica will see a service launch in Q3 this year and Nicaragua has no date and is classed as ‘unknown’.
