Eutelsat and Paratus expand OneWeb partnership across Southern Africa

Eutelsat and pan-African telecoms network services provider Paratus Group say they have signed a new multi-million, multi-year agreement to expand delivery of Eutelsat’s OneWeb LEO satellite connectivity services across Southern Africa.

Under the new agreement announced on Wednesday, Eutelsat and Paratus will deliver an extended range of LEO services for fixed sites, as well as comms-on-the-move and comms-on-pause, in South Africa, Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia.

“Demand for resilient and high-speed connectivity continues to grow across Southern Africa, particularly in sectors operating across remote and distributed sites,” said Ghassan Murat, RVP MEA at Eutelsat.

Murat added that the new multi-year agreement reflects the success of Eutelsat’s collaboration with Paratus to date.

The two companies have been collaborating since 2022, when Paratus signed a distribution partnership with OneWeb prior to the latter’s sale to Eutelsat in 2023. The same year, Paratus also signed a deal to build a OneWeb teleport facility in Angola, which was launched in June this year. Paratus South Africa added Eutelsat OneWeb in its service offerings in January 2024.

“Expanding our LEO service offering with Eutelsat strengthens our strategy of delivering adaptable and robust connectivity solutions across Africa,” said Paratus CEO Schalk Erasmus. “The combined GEO and LEO capability allows us to serve customers with greater flexibility and performance.”

Paratus also incorporates LEO satellite operator Starlink in its portfolio via a reseller agreement signed in 2023.

The expanded Eutelsat OneWeb agreement comes hot on the heels of Paratus’ launch earlier this week of “Paratus 500”, which leverages its licenced fibre and satellite operations in 15 sub-Saharan markets as a single network, with OneWeb and Starlink connectivity part of that offering.
