Avantel, an Indian designer and developer of digital solutions, has won a INR4.6 billion (about US$49 million) order to supply real-time train information system (RTIS) devices for Indian Railways.
The order, from Indian manufacturing company Zetwerk Manufacturing Businesses, is for the supply and maintenance of satellite communication equipment, along with a one-year comprehensive on-site warranty and a five-year annual maintenance contract (AMC). The order is to be executed over a period of three years.
The deal is part of Indian Railways’ RTIS project, developed in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which enables automatic tracking of train locations and speeds, as well as arrival and departure timings, using satellite technology.
The contract includes the supply and maintenance of around 12,000 RTIS devices for the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the technology arm of the Railways. The deployment of these RTIS devices will support real-time tracking and improve the efficiency of railway operations.
According to India’s Economic Times news service, the deal not only aligns with Indian Railways’ push towards smarter and more connected infrastructure but with broader efforts to strengthen indigenous capabilities under various self-sufficiency initiatives.
Avantel designs, develops, and maintains wireless and satellite communication products, defence electronics, radar systems, and network management software applications, primarily serving the aerospace and defence sectors, though its customers include shipyards, ordnance factories and Indian Railways, as well as listed and private-sector entities.
