Mozambique’s Tmcel starts PoC tests on Angosat-2 satellite

Mozambique Telecom (a.k.a. Tmcel) has started proof of concept (PoC) tests with Angola’s Angosat-2 satellite as part of an agreement between the two countries earlier this year to cooperate in the space, telecoms and ICT sectors.

According to a statement from Angola's Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS) on Saturday, Tmcel will evaluate the capabilities of the Angolan satellite in the provision of telecoms services in Mozambican territory.

MINTTICS added that Televisão de Moçambique (TVM) has already successfully conducted PoC tests on Angosat-2, and is preparing to initiate a trade agreement that allow its public television signal to be distributed across Mozambique via the Angolan satellite.

“With the start of Tmcel's tests, Angosat-2 reinforces its presence in the regional market and demonstrates the potential of Angolan space infrastructure to support telecommunications and broadcasting operators from other African countries,” the MINTTICS statement said.

MINTTICS said the cooperation between Angola and Mozambique is part of a strategy to regionally expand services associated with Angosat-2, “contributing to transforming the spatial capacity of the Angolan satellite into concrete connectivity and communication solutions in the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).”

Angola and Mozambique signed their MoU in June 2026 on the sidelines of the 5th National Communications Conference in Maputo.

The same month, Angola’s Gabinete de Gestão do Programa Espacial Nacional (GGPEN) signed a pilot commercial agreement (PCA) with Telecom Namibia to use the Angosat-2 satellite platform to expand access to digital services across Namibia and the broader Southern African region.
