EMC joins up 56 UNHCR offices in 23 countries

Emerging Markets Communications (EMC) has won the contract to provide satellite communications and to integrate United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) offices worldwide.

Under the terms of the contract EMC will be responsible for connecting 56 UNHCR offices in 23 countries to UNHCR HQ in Geneva, Switzerland, and for the integration of business applications, voice, data, Internet and intranet across the entire network.

After an eight-month bidding process, EMC was selected as the UNHCR's provider of fixed satellite telecommunication services worldwide, providing an end-to-end satellite communications solution including licensing, logistics, installation and training for UNHCR personnel and maintenance.EMC will provide the service through its wholly-owned teleport in Raisting, Germany, and the regional support centres it runs in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.

* The Office of the UNHCR was established in 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Since then, the agency has helped an estimated 50 million people restart their lives. Today, a staff of around 6,540 people in 116 countries continues to help 19.2 million people.

** EMC is a provider of global satellite communications. It offers maritime services, teleport services, and private end-to-end satellite networks in more than 140 countries. EMC also operates two wholly-owned teleport facilities equipped with C, Ku, L, and X-band antennas.
