Media content distributor ViewMedia is planning to launch a new digital broadcast platform for francophone West Africa on the AMOS-17 satellite.
The satellite is owned by Spacecom, operator of the AMOS satellite fleet. AMOS-17 is located at the 17°E orbital position above Africa. ViewMedia’s platform on AMOS-17’s Ku-band frequency will provide DVBS-2 broadcast services to West Africa for a primarily francophone audience.
Spacecom is partnering with Satellite Mediaport Services Ltd. (SMS) to provide uplink services for the platform. With an array of over 40 antenna systems, SMS provides a clear, extensive, and uninterrupted line of sight to over 100 different communication satellites, supported by exclusive, fully redundant network connectivity to multiple points of presence in London and across the globe.
ViewMedia is an established operator within the global broadcast and transmission services industry. Its infrastructure provides digital satellite services to broadcasters in the Middle East, North and sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Europe and North America.
Yesterday we reported an announcement from Spacecom and Botswana Telecommunications that BTC is doubling its capacity on AMOS-7 communication satellite Ku beams. By the end of 2019, Spacecom will have three satellites servicing Africa: AMOS-7, AMOS-4 and AMOS-17. Ido Ginsburg, VP sales North America, UK & Nordic at Spacecom, has been quoted as saying “Spacecom is energized to take a greater role in the African market.” After Botswana and francophone West Africa it will be interesting to see which countries Spacecom targets next.
