Liberty Latin America signs up Ericsson for virtualisation drive

Major Latin American and Caribbean-focused telecommunications group Liberty Latin America (LLA) has announced that it has selected Ericsson for a major network evolution drive involving virtualisation of its core networks.

The three-year deal will see Ericsson deploying virtualized and cloud-based mobile core network solutions to serve the regional Liberty Latin America market.

Deployment is expected to get underway in the second half of 2020 with the aim of benefiting LLA’s regional operations, specifically those in Puerto Rico, Panama and the Caribbean islands. Ericsson says that LLA’s core networks will be completely virtualized at the end of the three-year project.

The deployment will include Ericsson Cloud Packet Core, Cloud Unified Data Management and Policy, Cloud Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Ericsson Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI) and Network Manager solutions.

Liberty Latin America is a leading telecommunications company with operations in Chile, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and other parts of Latin America. Its market presence is an impressive one; the company says it operates in 20 consumer markets and over 30 B2B markets.

The communications and entertainment services that it offers to its residential and business customers include video, broadband internet, telephony and mobile services. LLC also has an extensive subsea network, connecting over 40 markets with over 50,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable.
