Vingroup teased plans to launch affordable 5G smartphones in the US in 2021, while showcasing its debut range for the North American market.
In a statement, Nguyen Minh Viet, VinSmart mobile device research institute director said the company plans to “produce and launch some strategic product lines” in Q3 and Q4, noting the company has Qualcomm 5G chipsets alongside advanced audio and image technologies at its disposal.
VinSmart mobile division general director Nguyen Thi Hong said the company has already developed a prototype 5G mobile phone, with work underway to develop and commercialise 5G devices for “the US market because this is the place where 5G has become universal”.
She added VinSmart will launch 5G devices in its home market when operators launch commercial networks.
The Vietnamese company unveiled 4G smartphones the Vsmart Aris (pictured) and Vsmart Aris Pro for launch in the US. The Vsmart Aris Pro features a 20-megapixel front-facing camera.
VinSmart mobile division general director Nguyen Thi Hong said the smartphones will be ranged by major US ISPs. Bloomberg reported AT&T were lined up to range the smartphones under an OEM deal. Nikkei Asian Review said Vingroup secured a contract to manufacture two million units of the Aris line.
