Vivo opens smartphone assembly plant in Algeria as it targets local production

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo has opened a smartphone assembly plant in Algeria as it looks to increase its local manufacturing presence and tap into the country's growing demand for devices.

The plant, located in Oran and operated in partnership with Algerian company Smart Technologie Innovation (STI), covers 7,000 square metres and has an initial capacity of 2,000 smartphones per day.

Production is expected to eventually increase to around 6,000 devices per day as the facility expands. The plant currently employs nearly 200 people, with the partners targeting 600 direct jobs and more than 1,200 indirect jobs as production scales.

Vivo and STI also plan to gradually increase the number of smartphone components manufactured locally, with the aim of raising local content and developing a broader domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

The move comes as Algeria seeks to strengthen its domestic electronics industry and reduce reliance on imported devices.

According to Ecofin Agency, Algeria has the highest smartphone ownership rate in North Africa, with around 84.3% of people aged over 15 owning a smartphone. Annual smartphone demand in the country is estimated at close to 7 million units.

Vivo, which was previously part of BBK Electronics, primarily targets the mid-range and high-end smartphone segments and also produces accessories and software.

The Oran facility gives the company a local production base in one of Africa's larger smartphone markets, while providing scope to increase manufacturing capacity and localise more of its supply chain over time.
