After just three days on sale in China, the iPhone 5 racked up sales of over 2 million, according to official sales figures published by Apple. The opening weekend was hailed by the firm’s CEO Tim Cook as “the best first weekend sales ever in China.”

First launched in September, the device sold over 5 million units during its first weekend of general release. Originally released in the US and 30 other markets, the iPhone 5 will increase its global footprint by the end of the year, reaching 100 markets with what Apple has termed “the fastest iPhone rollout ever.”

While the iPhone 5 is being sold via two of the three largest Chinese mobile operators, market leader China Mobile uses a 3G standard which is not compatible with the device, which could well stem the spread of the device.

In addition, the expensive device could be considered somewhat luxurious for a market in which Android devices are widely available at low prices.
