Kyivstar and Vodafone offering LTE-900 across Ukraine

Ukraine’s Kyivstar has extended its 900MHz 4G LTE services to all 25 regions in the country four months after launching the offering.

TeleGeography reports that Kyivstar spearheaded the service in the country’s western regions in July using refarmed GSM spectrum, and with the addition of 90 small towns in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions (oblasts) it has achieved a nationwide 900MHz footprint.

Vodafone Ukraine has also extended its LTE-900 coverage to Donetsk and Luhansk as it rolls out its network to all regions nationwide by the end of the year.

Ukraine’s deployment of LTE-900 technology is aimed at connecting rural regions and smaller settlements that were difficult and expensive to reach using 1800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum. Several Ukrainian operators – including Kyivstar, Vodafone Ukraine and Lifecell - recently signed a deal to share infrastructure, which has facilitated the rollout.

All three of these operators are aiming to meet the conditions of their LTE licences by extending coverage to 90% of Ukraine’s population by the end of June 2022. Currently Kyivstar claims 85% coverage between its 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum, while Vodafone Ukraine claims over 80%.
