O2 Slovakia taps Ericsson for 5G and RAN modernisation

O2 Slovakia has selected Ericsson to modernise its RAN and deploy its 5G network.

The Swedish vendor appears to have emerged victorious from multi-vendor 5G trials conducted by the operator in October across Bratislava. Despite confirming the selection, O2 Slovakia has not revealed a planned date for its commercial 5G launch.

O2 CEO Igor Toth said: “From this moment on, we can fully focus on the plan to expand the availability of a new generation network in Slovakia, which will cover the growing demands of our customers’ data traffic.”

TeleGeography notes that rival operator Slovak Telekom began offering commercial 5G services in mid-December 2020, giving it a head start on O2.
