In partnership with Safaricom, ADC will be supplying its InterReach Fusion solutions to provide in-building wireless coverage at over 40 sites in Kenya, including the famous 14-storey Landmark Plaza in Nairobi. Safaricom selected ADC's InterReach Fusion systems because, among other reasons, the InterReach Fusion solution uses standard structured building cabling and other components that can be sourced locally in Kenya, which reduces installation and maintenance costs. Another company involved in the contract will be ADC's distributor in Kenya, AlanDick East Africa.

Nairobi's Landmark Plaza complex comprises a shopping mall, banking hall and offices. Just like many other buildings in the city centre, outside coverage was limited because of the low level of the external antennae and the obstructions caused by adjacent buildings. According to Naran Jadva, Project Manager at AlanDick, "With the ADC solution, coverage in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequencies is optimised in every corner of the building and users don't have to flock to the windows or go outside to make calls. Also important from a business perspective is the system's ability to provide Internet access through users' mobile phones wherever they are in the building."

Particular benefits claimed by ADC for its InterReach Fusion system are:
      

  • delivery of multiband coverage with a single set of electronic hubs and remote antenna units;

  • utilisation of standard structured cabling to link antennae and other components;

  • control of each antenna's power level according to the individual requirements of its location; and

  • scalability that connects many buildings or wings without any power loss at any antenna.
