Indonesian telecom solutions provider Solusi Sinergi Digital (Surge) and Nokia revealed on Friday they have officially signed a multi-year partnership deal to deploy Surge’s 5G FWA network in Java, Papua, and Maluku.
Under the deal, Surge will leverage Nokia’s existing FTTx, IP and optics infrastructure for backhaul and transport, along with a new RAN and CPE solution customised for FWA use cases.
The solution comprises equipment from Nokia’s AirScale RAN portfolio, including its latest generation of AirScale Baseband combined with RRH (remote radio head), and zero-footprint site solutions, powered by Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology.
Surge will also utilise Nokia’s intelligent network management system, MantaRay NM, which provides a consolidated network view for optimal monitoring and management.
Nokia said the deal also includes deployment, maintenance, and support services that leverage AI for enhancing performance, efficiency, and safety. Deployment will start in December 2025.
“This deal with Nokia gives us a platform to build a unique and best-in-class 5G network ready for the digital world that will bridge the digital divide and bring affordable connectivity to even more people,” said Shannedy Ong, director at Surge Indonesia, in a statement.
The official partnership follows an MoU signed by Nokia and Surge in March 2025 to deploy a 5G FWA network using the 1.4-GHz band. That MoU also included Orex SAI (NTT DoCoMo and NEC’s Open RAN JV), which announced last week it has started deploying its Open RAN-based 5G FWA solution for the project.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) auctioned off 1.4-GHz spectrum in October to surge and Eka Mas Republik (which owns MyRepublic) for FWA services in hopes of boosting home broadband takeup in Indonesia.
Surge’s spectrum licence covers Region 1, which includes Jakarta, Papua and Maluku, while MyRepublic’s licence covers the rest of Indonesia.
Surge plans to offer flat-rate 5G FWA services priced at around IDR100,000 (US$6.00) a month, providing speeds of up to 100 Mbps with no data cap and free installation.
