Andrew Corporation has introduced what is believed to be the industry's first all-digital remote radio head, a high-power unit that is intended to provide cost savings and coverage flexibility for global 3G networks.

At 22.5W, the Andrew OneBase remote radio head is a high power convection-cooled one-man-lift remote radio unit, using fully-digital architecture, including digital pre-distortion and dual-diversity reception. It is currently on trial with two global customers.

Remote radio heads are part of a distributed base station system in which all radio-related functions are contained in a unit mounted outside a traditional base station transceiver system (BTS) and linked to a main unit that contains the control and baseband signal processing. Remote radio heads enable lower capital and operating expenditures, reduce typical power requirements, and add flexibility to network configurations. The product is the most recent addition to the OneBase product family, which combines Andrew products and technology into complete solutions for use in integrated BTSs.
