Concilium Technologies has launched AirMagnet's Vo-Fi Analyser, a dedicated Voice-over-Wireless-LAN (Vo-WLAN) analysis tool.
VoWLAN requires a very reliable, predictable network and is far more susceptible than regular data traffic to issues such as irregular packet delivery (jitter) and packet loss, than data traffic. VoWLAN problems can be caused by a number of different sources, including the handset, wired or wireless network, QoS settings or call manager.
AirMagnet's Vo-Fi Analyser is designed to detect voice problems at the source and to determine their origin. By monitoring the factors that affect VoWLAN and by providing response strategies, the AirMagnet Vo-Fi Analyser is moving into place in markets such asSouth Africa, which is poised for Wi-Fi phone market growth.
VoWLAN itself is still in the very early stages of adoption, with many issues affecting the end-user, e.g., dropped or failed calls, dead spots, poor voice quality and choppy audio. All these will result in significant barriers to adoption. After all, if an Internet page takes a few extra second to load, or an e-mail takes an extra minute to arrive, the impact on the user is minimal. However, when voice packets are delayed, and calls are dropped, users and ultimately customers are negatively affected.
The AirMagnet Vo-Fi Analyser is also intended to monitor every call from end-to-end, going beyond the traditional boundary of wireless to integrate with the call manager, or IP PBX. By providing a more complete picture of the elements affecting the VoWLAN network from both the wireless and wire side, AirMagnet can determine the root cause of the VoWLAN problem(s).
AirMagnet's Vo-Fi Analyser can also validate and monitor QoS for all devices on the network. Users can see the relative amount of voice and data traffic, identify mismatched QoS settings and ensure all traffic is handled according to QoS prioritisation standards. QoS configuration validation guarantees that both wireless access points (APs) and wire-side devices are properly configured to meet the technical QoS specifications for VoWLAN.
* AirMagnet's Vo-Fi Analyser has been named one of three finalists for the 2006 Best of Interop award in the VOIP and collaboration category. This competition has been set up by CMP Media LLC's Network Computing in partnership with Interop and to honour promising networking technology products exhibited at Interop.
