Thailand’s market-leading operator AIS is implementing 3G mobile backhaul solutions based on technology from Cisco. The solutions, which cover aggregation, access and network management, will be provided by NEC Thailand.
With over 37 million subscribers, AIS has a market share of close to 54%. The operator recently acquired a 2.1GHz 3G licence and will use this new frequency to address the growing demand for mobile broadband and Smartphone data services.
Wichian Mektrakarn, CEO of AIS, noted that 3G would “upgrade this industry for Thailand”, adding that the operator would deploy 3G services on the 2.1GHz band as soon as possible.
Dr. Tatchapol Poshyanonda, Cisco’s MD in Thailand, added that the network would “be capable of supporting reliable, first class cell-site backhaul services.”
