Open Mobile Virtualises IMS Core with Interop for VoLTE

Open Mobile is deploying a virtualised IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Core from Interop Technologies to provide a range of network services in Puerto Rico.

Built on 3GPP standards with added architectural benefits to improve performance and scaling, the virtualised IMS Core provides the foundation needed to launch advanced IP services. Open Mobile IP-based services include Voice-Over-LTE (VoLTE), Emergency Local Breakout (LBO) for VoLTE Roaming, Rich Communication Services (RCS), Voice-Over-WiFi (VoWiFi) and IP Short-Messaging Gateway (IP-SM-GW).

In February 2017 4th and 5th placed Open Mobile and Sprint announced plans to merge their Puerto Rican businesses. Regulatory approval is expected by the end of this year. The merger aims to create a stronger competitor to the Puerto Rican big three, AT&T, Claro and T-Mobile. By offering an expanded range of services including post-paid, pre-paid, business and Lifeline (a government subsidised scheme for low-income citizens) services the Open Mobile-Sprint joint venture aims to deliver increased scale, an expanded distribution channel, improved network capacity and an enhanced spectrum position. The virtualised IMS Core can be seen as a technical underpinning for the merged entity to deliver these benefits.

"We are excited to help Open Mobile solve VoLTE roaming challenges with our virtualized IMS Core," said John Bickford, Senior Vice President Americas at Interop Technologies. "In addition to solving the complex challenges surrounding VoLTE Roaming, our solution allows Open Mobile to seamlessly rollout additional IMS services in the future, providing flexibility and savings."

"We have relied on Interop Technologies’ private cloud messaging solutions for more than six years and we thoroughly trust their solutions and technical expertise," said Neville Cruz, Chief Technology Officer at Open Mobile. "This made it easy for us to choose Interop’s virtualized IMS Core to start our transition to the new All-IP services network."

Through Interop’s cloud-based IMS Core, Open Mobile will first implement Interop’s Emergency LBO for VoLTE Roaming solution to enable local emergency calling for inbound VoLTE roaming subscribers. Interop’s flexibility enables Open Mobile to add additional IP services effortlessly, as their business needs evolve.
