MTN looks to launch Namibian mobile offering by end-August

Pan-African operator group MTN has announced its goal of launching a mobile offering in Namibia by the end of August.

The South African company has had a presence in Namibia for over 20 years, but this has not encompasses a commercial mobile service. Its focus in the market has predominantly been on providing internet services to the financial, wholesale and logistics sectors.

MTN Namibia executive Hester Marais confirmed “we are working towards end of August.” The group has a strong mobile presence across Africa, delivering services in markets such as Ghana, Nigeria and its home market of South Africa.

Currently, the Namibian market is led by state-owned MTC. MTN is looking to use the infrastructure of another state-owned operator, Telecom Namibia, to deliver its mobile offering. In addition, the group aims to bring its mobile money service to the country, which has a population of 2 million.
