The GSMA has postponed MWC Shanghai 2022 which was scheduled to go ahead in June this year, due to evolving pandemic measures in the city.
In a statement, the trade body expressed “regret” at the annoucnement as it could not “continue confidently” with preparations for the three-day event.
The announcement comes as the Chinese government placed severe restrictions on serval cities in China to curb Covid-19 infection cases.
“Convening the industry benefits the entire ecosystem. This coming together spurs innovation and dialogue that truly unlocks the power of connectivity so that people, industry, and society thrive,” said GSMA CEO John Hoffman.
“As we learn to live in this new world, we will crack the code on how to bring people together so we can get on with the work we love. We always knew that bringing the MWC series of events back would require responsible leadership and continued judgement in respect of local and global circumstances.”
The trade association also cancelled its M360 Eurasia event in Moscow earlier this month due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
