Lithuanian operator Bite began a plan to merge broadband subsidiary Mezon this year, a tie-up it claimed will provide competition against rival internet service providers, as Bite CEO Gintas Butenas bemoans a lack of competition in this segment.
In a translated statement, Butenas said the merger had been in process for “some time” and that it was a “logical conclusion”, as it will deliver more value to customers by combining networks, services and businesses of the two companies.
Bite stated plans to leverage Mezon’s assets to build a joint next-generation network instead of operating two separate networks in parallel. The company selected Ericsson for the construction of its 5G network which over the course of several years - Bite will invest €100 million in upgrades and network constructions.
"Record investments in communication networks and our chosen technological strategy will ensure that we will have an exceptionally high-quality 5G network, allowing us to enter another league – [and provide] serious competition with traditional fixed Internet providers. There is a lack of competition in this service segment in Lithuania today", said Butenas.
