Telkom Indonesia’s mobile unit Telkomsel has reportedly fully restored 4G internet services in Papua province and the Aru Islands of Maluku after repairing a damaged backup subsea cable that disrupted service in nine areas.
According to the official Antara news agency, the link connecting the port towns of Dobo and Tual in Maluku was damaged, causing internet service disruptions in the districts of Mimika, Asmat, Mappi, Dogiyai, Paniai, Deiyai, Waropen, Nabire and the Aru Islands.
Yasrinaldi, GM for Telkomsel's Maluku and Papua operations, said on Wednesday that the backup link has been repaired and 4G internet services have been restored in all nine areas, the report said.
The cable failure between Dobo and Tual is separate from another reported subsea cable break affecting central and southern Papua since August 16.
According to Antara, Telkom sent a vessel on Wednesday to start repair work for that cable, with the damaged portion located between Sorong and Merauke. The connection is expected to be restored by the end of next week.
Telkomsel is offering affected prepaid customers replacement data for unused internet during the outage, while postpaid users of both its mobile and home broadband services will get pro-rated discounts on their bills based on the duration of the disruption, the report said.
