Jamaican operator Flow has claimed to launch the country’s first commercial 5G network, providing coverage to around 70% of the population.
According to BN Americas, parent company Liberty Latin America (LLA) invested US$74 million in the rollout, comprising US$50 million for network equipment and systems and US$24 million for spectrum licences.
The initial deployment brings 5G services to roughly seven in 10 Jamaicans. Jamaica’s Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications, Daryl Vaz, described the launch as a “national development moment”, highlighting the role of next-generation connectivity in supporting economic growth and digital transformation.
Flow executives also revealed that the operator has invested a further US$85 million in rebuilding and upgrading its network following damage caused by Hurricane Melissa in October, according to LLA.
The launch expands LLA’s growing 5G footprint across the Caribbean and Latin America. The group has already introduced 5G services in Puerto Rico, Panama, Costa Rica, the Cayman Islands and Barbados.
LLA serves 6.8 million mobile subscribers across its markets and generates annual revenues of more than US$4 billion.
