CelcomDigi and Maxis have both accepted spectrum assignments from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), with each operator bolstering its position in the 2600MHz band.
CelcomDigi, through its wholly owned subsidiary CelcomDigi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd (CDTel), secured 2x20MHz in the 2600MHz band and 2x5MHz in the 900MHz band for a combined MYR381.75 million (US$94m), Bernama reported. The 2600MHz assignment runs for four years, while the 900MHz assignment runs for five.
The 2600MHz award gives CelcomDigi a contiguous 2x40MHz holding in the band. The 900MHz assignment also improves its position in that band, which the operator said would support wider and deeper coverage nationwide.
In a statement, CelcomDigi said the new spectrum would improve its capital expenditure efficiency and boost network capacity and service quality to meet growing customer demand for quality and reliability.
Maxis, meanwhile, picked up an additional 2x10MHz of 2600MHz spectrum. The operator will pay an upfront fee of MYR203 million, plus annual fees totalling MYR84 million over the assignment period, which also runs for four years, according to a filing with Bursa Malaysia.
