Etisalat brings 5G to the Dubai metro

Middle Eastern operator Etisalat has claimed that Dubai’s Etisalat Metro Station is the first 5G-enabled metro in the Middle East and North Africa region.

Metro users can expect speeds of more than 1Gbps and faster response time with latency less than one millisecond, says the operator. At 20 times faster than 4G and with ultra-low latency, 5G technology allows users to stream live 4k resolution videos, with virtually no lag, and users will enjoy AR/VR services, cloud gaming from anywhere in the UAE, robotics, and instant wearable technology connectivity, says Etisalat.

Etisalat Metro Station opened to the public in September 2011. It is the eastern terminus of Dubai Metro’s Green Line.

The arrival of 5G at this Dubai metro follows Etisalat’s launch of the first ‎‎commercial 5G wireless network in May 2018 in the UAE, making it the first telecom operator in the MENA region to achieve this.

Other milestones include offering 5G at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2019, and the recent achievement of over 3.1Gbps download throughput over Etisalat’s 5G Stand Alone (SA) network.

Plans to transform Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) into an innovative smart and sustainable district, powered by the 5G network are under way and 5G coverage has even been made available in the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa. Etisalat also announced in June that it has become the first mobile operator in MENA to provide 5G coverage inside an international airport.
