Saudi Arabian mobile operator Zain KSA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies on Friday to cooperate on green energy solutions for 5G networks.
Under the MoU, Zain KSA will work with Huawei to deploy "energy-efficient hardware such as MetaAAUs and ultra-wideband RRUs on a large scale." Huawei says that technologies such as extremely large antenna arrays, ultra-wideband power amplifiers, and RF algorithms will greatly improve network energy efficiency.
Zain KSA will also deploy Huawei’s iPowerStar intelligent energy saving solution, which supports differentiated equipment energy efficiency, frequency band coverage, traffic volume, and enables energy saving features.
Also, the two companies will explore end-to-end energy saving and reducing carbon emissions generated throughout the equipment lifecycle, including manufacturing, transportation, online operation, and recycling.
The MoU is an extension of existing cooperation between Zain KSA and Huawei in the green energy field for the past three years. Huawei says its solutions helped Zain KSA reduce electricity usage of its mobile networks by 28% last year.
The MoU was signed at Huawei’s Global Mobile Broadband Forum 2023 event in Dubai.
