Cassava and Vambo aim to extend AI to African languages

African tech giant Cassava Technologies is continuing its drive to be a major player in Africa’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, this time through a partnership with Vambo AI, an African start-up, to accelerate the development and rolling out of AI solutions that address the continent's unique linguistic, cultural and economic landscapes.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) aims to see Vambo AI leveraging Cassava's secure, high-performance AI factory (announced in March), which is equipped with Nvidia GPU-based supercomputers, to accelerate the creation and distribution of African-trained language models and related AI systems.

Vambo says its focus is creating language technology tools to preserve, promote and enhance indigenous languages, giving users the ability to use world-class, highly advanced artificial intelligence in their native tongues

This partnership revolves around a collection of open-source large language models designed specifically for African languages and contexts.

Vambo AI says the initiative is critical since it establishes a standard for AI solutions in Africa and marks a continental milestone. It is also intended to empower developers, researchers and enterprises to build inclusive, culturally intelligent AI applications.

Vambo suggests that by combining its language technology expertise with Cassava’s advanced compute infrastructure, the partners are creating AI systems that serve real African needs – across education, health, fintech, government and beyond.

Cassava has been very busy in the AI space lately. Soon after the AI factory announcement, it signed an MoU with Sand Technologies, a global enterprise AI solutions company, to enhance the delivery of AI solutions and GPU-as-a-service (GPUaas) across the African continent.
