Gabon introduces digital services platform for businesses

Gabon has introduced a new platform. Called Kimba, its aim is to drive demand and supply matching in digital services.

Gabon's Minister of Digital Economy, Mark Alexandre Doumba, launched the Kimba platform late last week. In the local Nzebi language, Kimba apparently means to move, go, move forward, or innovate, in line, it seems with the government’s stated intention to use the platform as part of the digital transformation of businesses.

The platform will offer two interconnected spaces. In one, large companies can advertise their needs for any digital solutions requirements they may have in management, production, distribution, cybersecurity or automation.

In the other, local startups can propose tools, software and other services to meet those needs, submitting their solutions, presenting demonstrations, explaining their technologies and responding directly to requests. Based on this, a request can be matched with an available solution, radically reducing the time that might otherwise be needed.

The platform is also intended to lead to the creation of contracts or pilot projects between established companies and startups and the circulation of information on local innovations.

The government no doubt hopes that the platform can boost the competitiveness of Gabonese companies and the strengthening of the country's digital ecosystem

However, its effectiveness isn’t yet proven. Indeed, as the Ecofin news agency points out, challenges will include technical reliability, adaptation to the needs of the digital market, and the capacity of startups to respond, particularly in terms of technical quality, delivery times and financial capacity.

Good coordination between public and private actors will also be necessary, it adds, in order to ensure regular monitoring of projects.
