A NFC-based mobile payments system will be launched in Hungary in early 2014 by all three of the country’s major mobile operators.
The system is being developed via an expansive collaboration between the three operators (T-Mobile, Telenor and Vodafone Hungary), the largest national bank OTP Nyrt, MasterCard, and loyalty card company SuperShop.
A six-month trial is due to start imminently, with the full-scale launch scheduled for early 2014. The service’s success of course depends on the availability of NFC-enabled handsets; Vodafone Hungary president Gyorgy Beck has stated that over 80% of new smartphones sold by the end of 2014 will feature the technology.
