Vietnam cable chaos continues

The regular issues facing Vietnam’s undersea cable connections since 2017 have continued long into 2021. Not long ago, the Asia America Gateway (AAG) undersea cable broke down yet again. This is apparently the third time the cable has been broken this year.

According to local news website VN Express, a fault was detected the Friday before last along the S1i branch of the AAG that connects Vietnam and Hong Kong,

To make matters worse, another problem – involving the Asia Africa Europe (AAE-1) cable – has yet to be fixed since detection last month.

Having two cables broken at the same time has made network congestion in the country a lot worse, affecting online meetings and lessons as well as streaming services. The previous issue with the AAG had apparently just been fixed – on 10 October.

It’s not yet clear when the AAG line will be repaired but between July and early October, the AAG had three problems along many different branches, affecting Vietnamese internet access.

We have reported AAG disruption on these pages a number of times, although it has been estimated that, since 2017, the AAG has broken down three to five times each year.

Connected in November 2009, the $560-million AAG handles more than 60 percent of Vietnam’s international internet traffic. The cable runs more than 20,000 kilometres, connecting Southeast Asia with the US, passing through Brunei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) is a 25,000km submarine cable from South East Asia to Europe across Egypt, connecting Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Greece, Italy and France.

Vietnam has six submarine cable systems and a 120 gigabit channel that runs overland through China.

Of close to 100 million Vietnamese, it is estimated that nearly 70 million are internet users.
