Meta has announced it is partnering with Brazilian neutral network, digital infrastructure and data centre group V.tal to establish a new cable landing point for Meta’s Malbec subsea cable in Porto Alegre.
The 2,500-km Malbec cable, which has been operational since 2021, currently connects Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Under the deal with V.tal announced on Thursday, Meta will add an extension branch to Porto Alegre in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Meta said in a blog post that Malbec will be the first international subsea cable to land in Rio Grande do Sul, bringing with it over 84 Tbps of international capacity and direct connectivity to northern Brazil and Argentina. The extension deal comes a few months after Meta activated a PoP in Porto Alegre.
Ana Luiza Valadares, Meta’s Public Policy Director for Connectivity and Infra, LatAm, said the expansion will improve the scale and reliability of digital infrastructure in Porto Alegre, improving online experiences across Southern Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
“It will contribute to attracting digital infrastructure companies, lowering costs for companies and improving consumer services” she said in a statement.
V.tal CEO Felipe Campos said that the project will position Porto Alegre as a new connectivity hub, adding that “all the Southern Cone countries will benefit from this new ecosystem, not to mention the end users and companies who will have a better experience when using the internet and digital applications.”
Meta expects the new extension to be operational in 2027.
