Telecom Egypt completes its two landing points for SEA-ME-WE-6

Telecom Egypt and subsea supplier SubCom announced on Wednesday they have successfully completed two landings for the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) subsea cable system on each of Egypt’s two coasts.

SEA-ME-WE-6 now has landing points in Port Said on the Mediterranean coast, and another in Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea. Telecom Egypt said it has established diverse and resilient terrestrial crossing routes between the two landing stations.

“These two landings enable the connection between the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments of the cable via two diversified unique trans-Egypt terrestrial crossing routes,” said Mohamed Nasr, MD and CEO of Telecom Egypt, in a statement.

Nasr added that the Eurasia route between Southeast Asia and Europe has proven to be an important, effective and critical route for telecoms traffic. “Thus, we keep developing new routes to connect Singapore and Egypt, adding layers of diversity, enhanced marine paths and much-needed capacity.”

The 21,700-km SEA-ME-WE-6 cable runs from Tuas in Singapore to Marseille, France, with 17 landing points in Bahrain, Bangladesh, Djibouti, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka and the UAE. The cable has a total design capacity of 126 Tbps (at 12.6 Tbps per fibre pair).

Apart from Telecom Egypt, the cable is backed by Beyon, Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC, Bharti Airtel, China United Network Communications Group, Dhiraagu, Djibouti Telecom, Microsoft, Mobily, Orange, PCCW Global, Singtel, Sri Lanka Telecom, Telekom Malaysia, Telin and Trans World Associates.

Batelco owns the landing points in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and the UAE, as well as the additional fiber pairs on the trunk between Bahrain and Oman.

SEA-ME-WE-6 is slated to be ready for service in the first quarter of 2026.
