Bahrain-headquartered technology group Beyon has announced the signing of an agreement to develop Khaleej North, an 800-kilometre submarine cable system that will further expand the planned Al Khaleej Cable, expected to be in service by Q2 2026, by connecting Bahrain with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq.
The original Al Khaleej Cable is described by the Submarine Networks website as the SEA-ME-WE 6 Gulf Extension, spanning 1,400 kilometres long to connect Bahrain with regional countries including Qatar, UAE and Oman. SEA-ME-WE 6, a 21,700-km high-capacity system, links Bahrain with 14 other countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
Fully owned and operated by Beyon, Khaleej North will be developed in partnership with SubCom, the global subsea cable provider currently delivering the Al Khaleej cable system.
Khaleej North, it is claimed, will further enhance Bahrain's capability in data traffic and sovereignty, global communication, digital resilience and cybersecurity.
It will also provide enhanced global connectivity in the region. Designed to meet the rising demands of hyperscalers, enterprises, cloud service providers, and government entities, the system will strengthen data exchange pathways and increase network resilience.
This news comes only a matter of days after we reported the arrival of the 2Africa Pearls cable system in Bahrain, next to Seef District, which Saudi Arabia-based service provider STC says will reinforce the country as a significant ICT hub in the MENA region.
