WACS gets 100G upgrade from Huawei

The West Africa Cable System now uses 100G transmission technology following an upgrade by Huawei Marine Networks.

Connecting the UK to South Africa, the WACS delivers 5.12 terabits of capacity per second. It is operated by a consortium of 18 companies.

Chairman of the WACS consortium’s Management Committee Vishen Maharaj said: “Our aim is to provide an advanced, stable and seamless communications network which contributes to the social and economic development of the African region.”

“We are constantly working to improve the capabilities of the WACS network while maintaining an economically viable and flexible service for customers”, he added.

The cable was recently landed in the Canary Islands, further strengthening the connections that it provides between Europe and Africa.
