Hondutel, the national fixed line provider of Honduras, has signed a new agreement with Starlink to deliver satellite connectivity to remote areas of the country.
Local outlet El Heraldo quoted the operator’s manager Jose Antonio Morales as saying: “The first five antennas … will be tested in places where there is no cell phone coverage, because the priority of this connection is to reach [areas] where there is no cell phone footprint or any other type of service.”
Starlink is a LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite provider backed by Elon Musk’s SpaceX venture. CommsUpdate reports that it currently has around 4000 satellites in orbit, and aims to launch a total of around 42,000.
The provider has procured licences for over 50 markets – most recently The Bahamas. It launched satellite broadband in Ecuador at the end of last month.
