SpaceX’s satellite division, Starlink, has disconnected more than 2,500 of its satellite kits that were being used by scammers operating in Myanmar.
In a post on X, Starlink’s head of business operations, Lauren Dreyer, said the company had worked with law enforcement agencies to disable the devices located near suspected “scam centres.”
“We are committed to ensuring the service remains a force for good and sustains trust worldwide - both connecting the unconnected and detecting and preventing misuse by bad actors,” Dreyer said.
According to BBC News, more than 30 scam compounds are believed to be operating along the Thai-Myanmar border. These centres reportedly traffic people under the guise of legitimate employment, then force them - often through torture - to work long hours on online scams that generate tens of billions of dollars annually for criminal syndicates, many of which are believed to originate from China.
Most of the trafficking victims are from African countries, the report added.
