As part of what appears to have been an upbeat overview of the country’s ICT sector the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology recently highlighted some ambitious plans for local phone production.
Egypt aims to produce 15 million mobile phones next year and to begin exporting devices to international markets, the minister, Amr Talaat, said on Monday. This follows the manufacture of 10 million units in 2025.
Daily News Egypt reports that, during a speech at the Institute for Intelligence and Security Science Studies, Talaat claimed that the 10 million devices produced this year featured 40% local added value. He also pointed out that Egypt has successfully attracted 15 international mobile brands to manufacture locally.
This is described as part of a broader strategy to transform the communications and information technology (ICT) sector into a production-led strategic power.
Talaat reported that Egypt’s digital exports reached US$7.4 billion in 2025; the target is to increase this to US$9 billion. Egypt already has a pivotal role in global data infrastructure, he pointed out: 21 international subsea cables currently pass through the country.
The government also aims to train one million people in technology specialities by 2030, up from 800,000 trainees this year; this drive will be backed by new schools for applied technology and the Egypt University of Informatics.
He also referred to a growing digital governance offering and job creation in the outsourcing sector. As for his ministry’s future priorities, these include completing the rollout of fibre optic cables across all governorates in the country and enhancing mobile coverage following the launch of 5G services.
