Colombian operator WOM is deploying 125 cellular backhaul sites in partnership with Axess Networks as it seeks to connect rural areas as part of its nationwide build-out.
A unit of international investment fund Novator Partners, WOM is a new operator in Colombia. Last February it obtained a block of 700MHz spectrum and two blocks of 2500MHz spectrum at auction, which it is now using to provide 4G coverage in 674 rural areas of the country before the end of 2021.
AXESS settled a multidisciplinary team for this initiative in order to guarantee rapid deployment within the agreed schedule. This project will positively impact the most remote regions of Colombia that are still outside the national connectivity map. More than 317,000 families will benefit from connectivity to the internet and mobile phone network for the first time.
Jaime Monroy, WOM's Director of Transmission, said: “The country needs an operator that drives change and improves access to connectivity in all regions of Colombia. We are working to bring quality services to the disconnected areas of Colombia and contribute to development.”
