Gamtel expanding and upgrading backbone network with Huawei

Gambia’s state-backed operator Gamtel has is set to upgrade and expand its core network with Chinese vendor Huawei.

Under the agreement, Huawei will deploy seven DWDMs and OLTs to boost bandwidth, with Gamtel saying that it expects this to address the “increasing unprecedented service and coverage demands in the ICT sector.”

The operator stated: “As a partner to the numerous carriers within and outside the borders of the Gambia, and a key player in the government of the Gambia digitalisation initiatives, we remained committed to…building the information technology highway.”

We recently reported that Gambia’s government had procured funding for a second submarine cable link as part of the World Bank’s WADI project.
