Maroc, Orange and Inwi launch 5G services in Morocco

Morocco’s three main telcos – Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc and Inwi – officially launched 5G services in the country on Friday, mainly in urban centres, four months after receiving their 5G licences.

Incumbent Maroc Telecom announced its launch to customers via SMS, saying that everyone with a 5G-compatible smartphone will automatically switch to the 5G network, at no additional cost, in covered areas.

For customers keen to buy a 5G phone, Maroc Telecom said it is offering new mobile 5G packages with prices starting at MAD119 (a little under US$13.00). Maroc Telecom is also offering a 5G-powered home broadband service.

Inwi also announced that its 5G service is available to customers with compatible smartphones, with no SIM card replacement or plan change required.

Orange Maroc said in its launch announcement that its 5G service is available in over 100 cities in Morocco, and will be expanded nationwide in the coming months.

Morocco’s telecoms regulator, ANRT, awarded 5G licences to Maroc Telecom, Inwi and Orange Maroc – for which they forked out a total of MAD2.1 billion – at the end of July this year.

Under the licence terms, all three operators must cover at least 45% of the population with 5G by the end of next year, and to 85% coverage by 2030.

Incumbent Maroc Telecom has a slight edge over the competition in terms of capacity, as its 5G licence includes 120 MHz of spectrum, while Orange Maroc and Inwi each received 70 MHz of spectrum.

Maroc Telecom also unveiled a revamped logo to mark its 5G launch, with its colours switching from blue and orange to red (the same colour of the Moroccan flag, the company noted in a statement).
