At a time when Vietnam may be facing trading difficulties with the US, the announcement of a collaboration effort with industry organisation the GSMA seems a timely boost to its ambitions for economic growth – at least in telecommunications.
The GSMA and the Vietnam Digital Communications Association (VDCA) have this week announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that highlights plans to deepen cooperation to accelerate Vietnam’s mobile and digital communications ecosystem.
Launched by the government in 2011 the VDCA is described as "a prominent social-professional organisation dedicated to the advancement of digital technology and communications in Vietnam".
Through the MoU, the GSMA and VDCA will focus on how the mobile ecosystem can help support the Vietnamese Government’s Information and Communication Infrastructure Plan 2021-2030. This includes expanding broadband infrastructure to cover 99% of the population with 5G networks by 2030, promoting environmentally sustainable digital infrastructure, creating innovation zones to accelerate technological development, and positioning Vietnam as a regional hub for network and data security.
Through this MoU, the GSMA and VDCA say they will share technical expertise, promote industry events, and convene stakeholders through thought leadership platforms. The GSMA will contribute through its global work on spectrum policy and cybersecurity frameworks. Resources such as the GSMA Mobile Threat Intelligence Framework (MoTIF), guidelines on fraud prevention and quantum-safe technology, and global best practices on regulatory governance will be made available to support Vietnam’s strategic goals.
As the GSMA points out, this collaboration is set against the backdrop of Vietnam’s emergence as a rising digital economy with global potential.
The GSMA and VDCA will discuss how they can help to accelerate Vietnam’s progress at the GSMA Digital Nation Summit Hanoi, taking place next week.
The summit will bring together senior government leaders, global tech companies, and industry experts to explore how emerging technologies – such as AI, GSMA Open Gateway, and open RAN – can power Vietnam’s next phase of digital development.
