Vodafone Fiji receives $55m cash injection

Vodafone announced a US$55 million cashing injection to bolster its Fiji unit’s network infrastructure to support surging data demand in the archipelago nation.

Vodafone Fiji regional CEO Pradeep Lal said the cash was needed as the country had seen a five-fold increase in data usage, 50% up from that last year. Currently, the operator has 500,000 data subscribers that in total use in excess of 10,000TB, which showcases the growing demand for data, said Lal.

Around 20 sites will go online to connect rural and maritime areas and tap into new customers.

The money will also be used to support a host of services customers widely use such as financial services, transport, ecommerce, remote working, healthcare, education, and entertainment.

Lal also detailed the operator is working on 36 satellite projects to bring connectivity to the 300 islands of Fiji, with 10 more to be brought into the pipeline.

The chief executive said Vodafone Fiji is evolving from a pure telecoms player to a technology firm that provides digital services beyond connectivity.
